Autumn Lookout, Algoma
42 x 58 inches watercolour
This painting was inspired over several years of
observation while living in the remote wilderness of northern Ontario. Living in this setting allowed me to follow and
absorb the life cycles, seasons and to feel a magical sense of place.
This place is a rock outcrop overlooking the Chippewa river valley. The ridge is graced by west wind swept ancient
white pines as well as seedlings that cling to cracks in the rounded precambrian rock carved and polished many times by
glaciers. Lichen and reindeer moss pattern the rock like a tapestry, that rhythm is repeated in the autumn coloured trees in the
distant hills.
The landscape seems to remind us of relationships; The river seems to shape the land, or is it the land that shapes the river?
