The abandoned empty water boats on Deception Island were waiting to be painted. Four years ago I tried but the wind was
too fierce on this volcanic beach. The air is bitter this time but the ash is warm, and a few curious chinstrap Penguins weigh
me up as I shade the hollow vessels from another era that are on their way to being dust.
