PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

Richmond Hill artist David McEown has been awarded the prestigious A. J. Casson Medal and $1000 for his painting "Wave on Stone #2".  This award is given to best painting in this major national watercolour exhibition.

On Thursday, November 3rd, the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC) unveils Open Water 2005, its 80th annual open juried exhibition of select water-media paintings.

The John B. Aird Gallery in Toronto houses this year's major exhibition.
Visual artist David McEown from Ontario,Canada with a painting entitled Wave on Stone #2 is one of the forty one artists accepted into the prestigious Canadian Open Water 2005 event.  Entries this year came from Canada, the USA, Malaysia and Israel.
The exhibition was juried by Brent Laycock CSPWC, Margaret Roseman CSPWC, and Liz Wylie, Curator of the University of Toronto Art Centre.  This exciting 80th annual showcase presents the height of watercolour and water-based media achievement with works ranging stylistically from high realism to loose abstraction.
The official gala opening and presentation of awards will take place November 3rd, from 6 to 8 pm.  Many of the artists will be present, and the exhibition will be officially opened by John Ryerson, Director of Varley Gallery in Markham.

The John B. Aird Gallery is located at 900 Bay St., at Wellesley, in Toronto, where the exhibition continues until November 25, 2005. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm.  Many of the art works are available for purchase. For collectors and enthusiasts, a full colour catalogue is available.

The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour was founded in 1925 out of the commitment to watercolour of twelve influential artists, including Fred Brigden and Group of Seven members Franklin Carmichael and A. J. Casson.  For the last 79 years, the Society has had a mandate to encourage and nurture watercolour excellence.  As such, it is the only Society outside of the British Isles represented in the Royal Collection of her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle.  Exhibitions, symposiums and high calibre workshops are the cornerstones of the organization.  As well, scholarships are made available to exceptional watercolour students as part of the Society's programme.
