These photographs were inspired by painting trips
to the temperate rain forest of Canada's Pacific Northwest coast. Places
such as Clayoquot Sound, the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii
(The Queen Charlotte Islands) have some of the last and largest temperate
rain forests left on the planet. In this "Forest Primeval" we can study the ancient groves of western red cedar ("the tree of life"), surrounded by moss-covered Western Hemlock and Sitka Spruce in various stages of life's cycle. These giant shade-tolerant trees, plus the humid climate, form a continual regenerating climax forest, thousands of years old. |
